Yes, now to create a new account on Instagram, the users are required to tell their birthdates as per the app terms and conditions. The user must be at least 13 years old to create a new account on it in most countries. According to the company, this will prevent underage people from joining the photo-sharing app. This will also help in keeping children safer and will also allow them more suitable experience as per their age. The birthdate will not be visible to the regular audience on Instagram but will be visible to the user while viewing their own private account information.
If the user has linked their Facebook account to their Instagram account then their birthdate will automatically be added to their account according to the one mentioned on the Facebook profile. Instagram said, “This is not public information and only you will be able to see it when viewing your own account information on Instagram. Editing your date of birth on Facebook will also change it on Instagram. If you don’t have a Facebook account or if you have not connected your accounts, you can add or edit your birthday directly on Instagram.” As per Instagram, it will soon be using the user’s birthdate information to create more personalised experiences like education around account controls as well as recommended privacy settings for young people.
Besides this, now the users will also be able to control who can send them direct messages on Instagram. Today onwards, you can allow or disallow people you follow message as well as add you to group threads. After enabling this setting, the users will no longer receive any messages, group message requests or story replies from the people they are not following.
